How to Prevent Back Pain When Going Back to School 

There are several steps to practice to maintain optimal well-being and avoid pesky back pain that distracts from your studies and inhibits your range of movement. 

1. Choose the Right Book Bag

Rather than single-strapped messenger bags that cause your spine to twist and slump, opt for a backpack that evenly distributes the weight on both shoulders. 

2. Practice Proper Posture Throughout the School Day

Students spend the majority of their day seated. We emphasize the importance of getting up frequently to stretch your body out; however, that isn’t always possible in class. When sitting at your desk, practice these tips that will keep your spine tall and confidence high: 

  • Sit all the way back in your chair
  • Keep your feet at hip distance 
  • Keep your arms and wrists at the same level
  • If using a computer, place it at eye level 
  • Roll your shoulders back and keep your chin high 

3. Warm Up Before Gym Class

Gym is an abrupt change from the standard classroom. After sitting all day, your muscles will be stiff, so it’s crucial to warm up before you run a mile on the track. Otherwise, you could easily injure yourself. We suggest dynamic stretching before you start your workout to avoid pulling a muscle.
